LEGO® Print Workshop: REACTOR at Two Tone Press

When we saw what the Two Tone Press gals, Michelle and Angie, were doing with LEGO® bricks, we knew we had to have them at our June First Friday Bricks of Awesome show. While Michelle and Angie don’t take credit for coming up with the process, they’ve learned to utilize LEGO® letterpress printing in unique ways which they will showcase at Bricks of Awesome through a printed mosaic.

Leave it to us to want to experience the action first-hand, so we headed over to their space for a workshop! Here is how it went:

First, we got to hear all about the process, including a brief history of the press we got to use (and yes, it was hard not to jump in and start playing with the LEGO® bricks right away)!

Once we were in the know, we were ready to start the design process. This took a lot of careful thinking, but who doesn’t want to spend Monday afternoon arranging LEGO® bricks into an image so we can print with it?!

There was a lot of creative trial and error for the REACTOR crew (although Travis, being the Creative Renegade that he is, had a sketch ready to go)! We were able to print in two colors of ink, so we had to think about arranging our bricks in the order we wanted to print the colors. We also had to remember that the image would print backwards from how we saw it on the base plate, which made the process a fun mind game!

After sticking LEGO® bricks in and popping them out a few times, we were ready to print! Some of us did the silver first and others did black, and it was really interesting to see the difference in color depending on which was used first. Also, the designs were printed on black or (you guessed it) orange paper.

After a few runs through the press, our prints were ready! We had a lot of fun seeing what everyone came up with and how it turned out…

But, you’ll have to come to the show to see our masterpieces for yourself! Our Bricks of Awesome show is a celebration of LEGO® bricks and how they can be used in out-of-the-box ways. Two Tone’s LEGO® printing process is the perfect example, and we are so excited to have their work showcased at the show! Get ready for an awesome show of EPIC colors, shapes, sizes and dimensions!
